Aleana The recent mandate to include Holocaust
Education in the curriculum of New Jersey's schools has created yet another validation of the arts as a pathway to learning and understanding. Responding to this collective and personal sense of urgency to provide Holocaust and prejudice reduction issues to today's young people, Pushcart has researched and developed material suitable for young audiences. Buttressed by extensive resource materials, Pushcart offers a production that is both accessible and compelling, designed to facilitate age appropriate discussion and inquiry.

"The Last, The Very Last . . . Butterfly" is a Holocaust remembrance piece designed for young audiences age 10 to adult. Adapted for the stage and movingly underscored with music, sound and visual media, " . . . Butterfly" is a collection of poems, narrative and drawings created by children who passed through the Terezin Concentration Camp between 1942 and 1944. The broad range of style and treatment of subject matter in both the poems and drawings illustrates the feelings, hopes and dreams of children growing up in a place with "little food, clothing or comfort, enclosed by barbed wire and Nazi soldiers standing guard." While the work tells a few, of many stories of the Holocaust, it also serves as a springboard for inquiry and a powerful source of inspiration and perspective for young people today.
