A Note From the Playwright
"The Last, The Very Last . . . Butterfly"
is not a musical play in the usual sense because it is a sad, tragic story.
It is about young people who were caught in a time and place known as The
Holocaust. They suffered punishment for no crime and most did not live
beyond their 12th birthday.
For me ". . . Butterfly" is a very personal story because my parents fled
Nazi Germany just in time to escape The Holocaust. They came to America
- where religious and cultural differences were appreciated, not persecuted.
I have always been deeply grateful for this precious legacy of freedom
in America.
I have become increasingly aware that this precious legacy - like a butterfly
- is beautiful, colorful, but fragile. It must be guarded, protected and
carefully nurtured. And so I have assembled this story, "The Last, The
Very Last . . . Butterfly" based on the poems, drawings and experiences
of children of the Holocaust. My hope is that it will offer young audiences
not only a view of that sad chapter of history, but also an opportunity
to think about each of our roles in protecting and nurturing the gift of
freedom for ourselves and future generations.
